Fire on the Mahia Peninsula

20/02/2009

While fire burnt through 150 hectares of pine and scrub and destroyed buildings near Mahia Beach, damage to our reserve at Opoutama is estimated to be more superficial.  While the fire crossed our land and burnt out weeds and cut wilding pines and damaged fences, reports suggest that recovery will be good if we can control weeds.  Trustee Geoff Davidson has a fence repair programme in hand.  And local Honorary Ranger Ian Pickering proposes to collect seeds and disperse these over the open areas.

So there is hope for a reasonable recovery - thanks to Ian and Geoff.
